Tech Guides :: Zimbra :: Client Choice :: Configuring Zimbra
Zimbra Web Client Extras
The Zimbra Web Client requires no configuration. Simply logon to webmail.humboldt.edu and you are all set.
Using a web browser for your email can be a bit different experience, if you are not currently using a browser-based client. It's pretty handy to be able to click on an email address and have a blank email message pop-up to the recipient. That can still happen with Zimbra, here's how:
Windows: Zimbra Notifier
The Zimbra Notifier notifies you of incoming messages, reminds you of upcoming meetings, and allows you click on an email address to compose an email to that recipient.
- Download and unzip the Zimbra Notifier
- Run ZimbraNotifier.exe
- Enter the following settings:
- Server Name: mail.humboldt.edu
- Check the box next to Use Safe Connection
- Serial Number: Q7K231CDF5ZH52RUC2
- User: Your HSU User Name
- Password: Your Password
- Specify how you want to be notified (Pop-up Window, Sound)
- Click OK
To enable "mailto" links
- Right-Click on the Zimbra Notifer in the Clock Tray
- Click Windows Integration
- Click Handle mailto: links
Mac: Webmailer
- Download and expand Webmailer 1.0 for OS X 10.4+
- Double-click on Webmailer.prefPane
- Click OK
- In the Webmailer Preference Pane (System Preferences), change the Default e-mail Application to Webmailer
- Make sure that Zimbra is chosen
- Close System Preference
Hint: Should you ever want to use a configuration other than your default, just hold shift when you open the mailto link.
If Webmailer does not show up in the list of applications, try downloading and running the "Mail Handler Fix". If it still does not work, control-click the preference pane (in the PreferencePanes folder, within the Library folder in your home folder or your hard drive) and choose "Show Package Contents". Go to Resources, within the Contents folder, and open the "Webmailer" application in there. That should do it!
Mac: Meeting Reminders
If the meeting reminders that are built-in to Zimbra aren't enough for you, install the Zimbra iSync Connector and allow iCal to remind you of meetings.
Installing the Connector for Apple iSync
- Close iCal.
- Open zimbra-isync.MACOSX_UB.dmg
- Run zimbra-isync.pkg
- Click Continue at the welcome screen
- Click Continue at the License Agreement screen
- Click Agree
- Click Install
- Enter an administrator user name and password (for your computer), if required
- Allow the ZimbraHelper to access your keychain
- The Zimbra Connector window will open. Follow the configuration steps below.
- Click Close to finish the installation
Configure the Connector for Apple iSync
Zimbra Connector for Apple iSync is configured from System Preferences.
- After the Connector for Apple iSync is installed, open System Preferences; click Zimbra from the Other row. The Zimbra dialog opens.
- Select the Account tab. Enter the following information:
- Description: Enter a name to identify this account.
- Server: mail.humboldt.edu
- Server port: 443
- Check Use Secure Sockets Layer to establish a secure connection to the port
- Your HSU User Name and password.
After the account information is entered, the user is authenticated with the Zimbra server. When authentication is complete, "Authenticated" displays in the lower right of the dialog.
- Click the Sync tab to set up your synchronization schedule and select folders to sync.
- From the Synchronize list select the sync schedule: Every 5 Minutes, Every 30 Minutes, or Every Hour, depending on your preference for how often Calendars sync.
- Select Calendars.
- Note: If you are using Leopard, you will have the option to select CalDAV for Calendars. If selected, the iSync Connector will automatically create a CalDAV account in iCal that's connected to the user's Zimbra account. Subsequently, all event syncing is done through CalDAV, rather than Apple iSync.
- Note: If you are using Leopard and you have already set up a CalDAV account, you will need to delete this account before you are able to change your Calendars Sync option to All or Selected.
- Note: Calendars you subscribe to from either the Zimbra Web Client and in iCal are not included when the calendars are synchronized.
- Click Sync Now to synchronize with your Zimbra Calendars. If your Calendars have a large number of entries, initial synchronization can take some time.
- Click OK to continue.
- Close System Preferences
