Ever since the gold rush of 1849, cultures form
all over the world have converged on Northern California.
Chinese immigrants brought their Taoist religion with them, and established many Temples, known as Joss Houses, throughout the northern state. I've visited a few and present some information and pictures here for your enjoyment. Photos by JO unless otherwise noted. Jess O'Brien

Note on the translating convention used on this site: Since I've drawn on the literature given out at each of the Temples described, different ways of translating Chinese are used on each page. The Pinyin system of the People's Republic of China is used in the more recent and scholastic writings, whereas the Wade-Giles system of translating is used on older pages and the ones that prefer the system that is used primarily in the Republic of China, Taiwan, and in Hong Kong. Therefore the reader should be aware that the same individual can be referred to as Kwan Tai, Guandi, Guan Gong, Kwan Yu, and Kuan Kung, as well as in other ways. |
