Department of Journalism & Mass Communication

Welcome

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in news editorial, broadcast news, public relations and media studies. We provide students with a solid foundation of skills and knowledge to become responsible media professionals.  Prefer law or graduate school? We’ll prepare you for that too.

Hands-on Experience

No need to wait. As a freshman, take journalism classes and get hands-on training. Play music or deliver the news on the student radio station KRFH. Work for one of our award-winning student publications: The Lumberjack newspaper, Osprey magazine or Humboldt Travel Journal E-zine. Produce a digital video for local television. Do it all and graduate on time.

Get Personal Attention

Small class sizes allow us to give you individual help. We provide effective mentoring, advising and career counseling. We guide you through your university career because we want you to succeed.

Create an Impressive Portfolio

Practical experience is the core of our program. We make it a priority for our students to complete internships and build a solid portfolio and résumé to show potential employers.

Take the Lead

Imagine yourself as a newspaper editor, magazine writer, radio station manager or television news reporter. Your leadership experience at Humboldt State University gives you the edge you need in today’s competitive media market.
