Himalaya Blackberry ...
RUBUS. Rosaceae. 'Himalaya' Another prolific "weed," the Himalaya Blackberry is also a member of the Rose Family. This variety is found in abundance along creeks and roadsides throughout the Pacific Northwest. The roots are perennial; the canes are biennial, growing one year and producing flowers and fruit the next. At first I tried to dig them up and get rid of them. This, of course, did not work ... so I tried 'peaceful co-existance.' The several plants allowed to grow in my garden required heavy pruning to control the thorny brambles; but the reward was a crop of delicious berries, which we enjoyed as berry pies during the holiday season.
