Geraniums
...
True geraniums are hardy perennials that prefer full sun but tolerate light shade ... and they provide colorful blooms throughout summer and fall. These fragrant plants have been part of my garden throughout the years ... from the bright orange ones that thrived in my childhood garden to the pinks and reds that now grow in pots on the deck. Transplants and cuttings have come from friends and family ... and others have been purchased at the local nursery. They grow well when planted in the ground or in pots and other containers ... alone or in combination with other plants ... indoors as well as outdoors. The Ivy Geranium lends itself well to hanging baskets. There are many varieties ... from the sturdy bushes with thick stems and velvety green leaves of the familiar common variety to the trailing vines with glossy green leaves of the Ivy Geranium. In between are the bushy Pelargonium ... also known as 'Martha Washingtons' ... and the various scented geraniums. Both plants and blossoms are fragrant. Be sure to remove the old withered flowers and the yellowed leaves regularly to encourage a longer blooming season.
