Sweet
Williams ...
DIANTHUS.
Caryophyllaceae. D. barbatus
This hardy biennial is a descendent of my Mother's garden ... the one she had when I was a young child. When I left home, I took the seeds and planted them. Each time I moved, I took seeds or starts ... and they became part of my new garden. Over the years the variegated shades of reds and pinks and white have faded ... and now I have only the bright red ones. Seeds sown in the late spring will bloom during the following year. Sweet Williams are not as fragrant as the other members of the Dianthus Family ... which include carnations and pinks ... but all thrive in sunny locations or light shade.
