GROWING IN MY GARDEN]
The Viola Family of perennials includes violas, violets, and pansies.  These plants grow best in moist, rich soils ... and self-seed profusely.  With the exception of violets (which thrive in shady areas), this plant family likes full sun in our coastal area.  They can provide color in borders or as ground cover for spring-flowering bulbs.  They also do well in pots.  The plant in the top right is a Johnny-Jump-Up (V. tricolor) which self-seeded from the previous year.  The purple and yellow flowers resemble miniature pansies. The one pictured at the top left is a similar variety of variegated blues, but lacking the splashes of yellow. Violas, as well as violets and pansies, are an enjoyable addition to the spring, summer, and fall garden ... providing both color and fragrance.
