Grouse Mountain is my personal 10 gallon home-brewery located in Eureka, California. I specialize in German and Scottish style ales, as well as seasonal lagers, meads, and cider. I make beer for special occasions (like my friend's wedding in June) and when I have money. Ah, the life of a student! I will also have a booth a Hops in Humboldt in Fortuna, CA in August.
I have been homebrewing since Jan 2003. I love it. I joke that my homebrewing is 'Plan B' in case my career in wildlife managment doesn't take off, but in reality it's something I will do for the rest of my life. In the last year I have started to hone my skills, and am upgrading to All-Grain, as well as focus more on German and Scottish varieties of beer. Humboldt County has a lot of great local microbrews, and although I love all kinds of beer, there seems to be too many 'american' and 'californian' style beers made that bury your tastebuds in hops and the effervescence of carbon dioxide. I don't know if it's my scottish blood or just my tastebuds, but the strong hops is not a taste I care for and as a result I don't make many IPAs or other high-hopped beers. This may be changing with the addition of hops to my garden, but I have read that homegrown hops are different than store-bought and they lend themselves to more refined hopped ales, we will see.
