Why do I have to take Hunter Ed to hunt in CA?
Hunting is a priviledge, not a right, and to help ensure the continuation of the hunting tradition the State of California requires you to complete a Hunter Education course where you learn to be a responsible, safe, knowledgeble, and involved hunter. This requirement has decreased the number of hunter-related incidents, which in turns helps protect hunting.

I already have my license, why would I need to take Hunter Ed?
In California you can purchase your license by showing the previous year's license. The hunter education certificate earned from completing the class is not required (except for the first time a license is purchased.) However, if you are a California resident that plans on hunting out of state, many other states require you to show proof of hunter education. If you took your hunter education course before 1990 there is no electronic record of your completing the course and you will need to take it again and pass the exam to get a certificate.
