Traditional Hunter Safety is a ten-hour class that includes complete coverage of the materials in the Today's Hunter in CA text as well as discussion, question and answer, and review. The test is 100 questions, multiple choice and is 80% passing. Without reviewing on your own time you should be able to pass this test by paying attention during the lecture and review portions, however higher scores are typical if you review after the class and complete the review questions.

Home Study Class:

No class offered in June, however another instructor is teaching at Humboldt Trap & Skeet on Monday June 23rd and Tuesday June 24th. Contact George Gatto for more information.

Session #1: Saturday July 26th (tenative)
Time & Location: 10am - 2pm at Humboldt Trap & Skeet Club in McKinleyville.
Click HERE for a map and directions.

Home Study Hunter Safety is a four-hour class that reviews most, but not all, of the material covered in Today's Hunter in CA text. There is less discussion of the material than the Traditional Hunter Safety. The test is 100 questions, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank, and it is 80% passing. In addition, Home Study students must complete a practical exam demonstrating safe firearm handling techniques to pass.

DO NOT take or pay for the online Pre-Certification Exam. Even though this exam is good practice, the certificate is not used by CA Hunter Education Instructors and is just an extra expense that you do not need to pay for.

Home Study Hunter Safety requires you to obtain the study material from the Eureka Fish and Game office OR use the online booklet to study during your own time. In addition to studying, the chapter review quizzes and practice test are used as review for the exam, however you are not required to turn in the completed reviews or buy the certificate of completion. Failure to study the material and complete the online review questions will be reflected in your exam score. The class session is review and exam only, with an additional practical exam component not present in the traditional class. I do not recommend the Home Study option for younger children, as it requires more focus and recall without the discussion and exploration present in the traditional class. However, I encourage parents to attend with their children, and if there are reading comprehension issues, it is possible to have the exam read to the student, staff permitting.
