Intsructor Bios & Workshop Descriptions
(in alphabetical order by last name)

Berry Chin

Barry was once told that it must take a juggler to drop that much. He replied, "Or an acrobat." Barry is both, but his more interesting skills include literacy and hairball design. He learned how to juggle after a heated debate with a squirrel; although to this day it is unclear whether it was disproving Euclidean geometry or wanted change for a diaper. This led to the realization that humans are not so unique in this world; science has found that animals can use tools, communicate, do arithmetic, and even read. Just one thing sets us apart. Juggling. It defines the human experience. Amen.

Beginning Acrobalancing - This workshop will work with fundemental partner work- no experience nessicary but being comfortable upside down is always a help. And no you don't need to bring your own partner- we're sure more than one person will show up... right??

Intermediate Acrobalancing - This workshop will work more advanced partner work. It's recomended that you can hold a handstand on your own for a few seconds at least and that you're comfortable being in the air (if you want to be a flyer), or your comfortable lifting someone else (if you want to base)

Advanced Acrobalancing: This workshop will focus on more advanced skills, with three or more partners.

  Vern Coffey

A New England native, Vernon Coffey discovered humboldt in 2000, when he came to Humboldt State University on exchange from the University of Massachusetts. It was here in arcata that juggling took on a central role in his life (thanks to the awesome community of jugglers in Humboldt). It was also here that he learned contact juggling and poi. After returning to Massachusetts to complete his degree, He's back in Arcata where he firedances, juggles, makes tofu, parties, and finds other ways to make good use of that Bachelor of Science degree.

Beyond the Butterfly: Intermediate to advanced poi-Taking the butterfly as its starting point, this workshop will explore several "opposite spin" patterns, including thread the needle and advanced variations, turning sequences, and the enigmatic butterfly weave. --

Clark Davis

Clark has been juggling since Fall 1985. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Resources Engineering from Humboldt State University. Clark's interest in the intimate bond between juggling and music has drawn him into a world of beating out rhythms in his juggling patterns. When he is not being dragged into a performance by his juggling partner he can often be found spending hours working on his devilstick and diabolo patterns.

Intermediate to Advanced Devilstick-This workshop will focus both on learning new tricks with devilsticks and exploring the world of creating music by beating out rhythms with them (flowersticks users are welcome, but may find themselves limited to certain tricks.)

Thomas Dunklin

Thomas is a Juggling Unitic. He learned to juggle in the early 1980's, to ride a unicycle in the late 80s, and only recently has attempted to combine the two. As a geologist and student of watershed cumulative effects, he seeks to test the limits of combinations, using balance as a test and application of equilibrium theories. Find the balance. If you lose the balance, restore the balance. If you can't restore the balance, try to fall without hurting yourself.. Thomas' juggling practice has been profoundly influenced by the teachings of Master Juggler Sergei Ignatov. Elements of these teachings will be incorporated into his workshops.

Beginning Unicycling Team-taught by Mike Leebolt (aka the Baron von Leeboldt) and Thomas Dunklin (the Juggling Unitic)- If you don't ride much, we will show you some fun tricks, new mounts, and more. If you don't have a unicycle, there will be extras available. If you don't know how to ride a unicycle, we will show you. If you ride a lot, share what you know. We will teach the basics of learning how to ride a unicycle. It may take you minutes, days, or years to learn how to ride, but if you want to learn, you can. (This workshop will be followed by an optional unicycling tour of Arcata.) "Introduction to MUNI (Mountain UNIcycling)" Taught by Thomas Dunklin (and any other Munitics who show up) Learn the basics of Mountain Unicycling. Try a fat-tire unicycle, and take it grass-rolling in a telemark ski-fashion. Try bouncing and hopping. Learn to hop curbs, and go on a challenging ride from the Community Center up into the Community Redwood Forest as part of the workshop.

Cindy Hamilton

Cindy is a former competitive baton twirler and Western States champ. She is newish to juggling, being introduced to it at last year's Humboldt festival. She is very familiar, however, with flailing objects into the air only to be conked in the head. She has taught baton twirling throughout California and in Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Switzerland. This class will be offered in English.

Baton Twirling 101- Tricks for Jugglers: Come learn basic handling, fingerwork, rolls, releases, and catches that you can use with club tossing & swinging, devil sticks, staff, and more. Bring whatever prop you have that is most like a long, thin stick...and I should have some extra batons for you to whirl around as well.

Jessi Hoffschildt

Jessi has been interested in acrobatics since she was one year old, being left on a doorstep by fairies who thought she was too insuferable. She thus attributes her performance and acrobatic abilities to the fey blood running through her system. She spent the last 48 years studing clowning, acrobatics, and juggling, a feat all the more impressive considering she's only 21. She was planning on joining Cirque de Soliel but instead decided to set her sights on something more challenging. Like finding out how many licks it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop. In her spare time she enjoys debunking the philsophical works of Hugh Hefner, rescuing dragons, and pathalogical lying.

Beginner's Pair Acrobatics: No expirence nessasary but always welcome. Pair Acrobatics or Balancing can be done by almost anyone, is tons of fun, and easy to impress your friends with. We will start with basic handstands and then pair up. And no you don't need a partner- well you do- but Jessi is sure more than one person will come to the workshop- right!? Right!? Jessi will have her lovely assitant Gabe with her who will help her demonstrate more advanced techniques for your viewing pleasure.

Jeff Jacobsen

The Amazing Craig Feeder taught JJ to Juggle over 25 years ago, all the way to club passing and then some! JJ is one of the founding participants of the Humboldt Juggling Society, and is hoping that many other jugglers from that long ago time will reunite at this festival. It seems that Jeff's favorite moment in juggling is when you just start catching on to a new pattern. He often tells people attempting to juggle for the very first time to cherish and savor the frustration, and the sweet moment of seeing a 3 ball cascade happen in their hands. Because once you learned it, you'll never get to learn it again, and chasing after ever more complex patterns is just not quite the same as the very first time. So, the only way to get close to that 'virginal' moment again is vicarious - to teach. Jeff often travels far and remote for his career in marine biology (mostly marine mammal and bird research), which is mostly an elaborate way to find new jugglers.

Beginner Club Passing: This workshop will cover the basics of learning the standard six club, four count passing pattern. Depending on the skill levels, and how quickly people learn, the workshop may cover picking up dropped clubs, and learning the basic left and right handed double spin pass. It is recomended that the student have a relatively solid 3 club pattern before taking this workshop(in other words, they can make at least 100 catches while juggling 3 clubs by themselves.) Most club passing involves very basic skills, so the challenge is to keep the rhythm and pattern going collaboratively. And boy howdy, does that ever improve one's self pass!

Mike Montag

A student at HSU, Mike moved to Arcata and soon learned to Juggle. Since then Juggling has become an obsession. Favorite props include clubs, Diabolo, rola bola and walking globe.

Diabolo- Fundamental Tricks: This begining/Intermediate workshop will focus on many fundamental tricks that can later be used in some pretty impressive combos. Whips, Chinese whips, Crack the whip, Wrap catches, Around the <insert body part here>, Cradles, and Suicides will be covered, as well as any other tricks you want to know that I can teach. This workshop is intended for those who can already get the Diabolo going, but those just getiting started are welcome as well.

Roy Newman

Roy has been juggling for about five years. He first learned to juggle oranges while working at a country club, and has not stopped since. While three ball jugging is his main passion, he also enjoys playing with the stix, diabolo, cigar boxes, footbag (his original game), the unicycle, contact juggling, and clubs. His current goal is to learn to juggle five balls and ultimately the five ball Mill's Mess.

All Shuffled Up!: A three ball shuffling workshop. Tricks will include: slow shuffle, fast shuffle, Luke's shuffle, shufflled Mill's, up-shuffle, Roy's shuffle, clawed shuffle and various variations.

Footbag Basics: a workshop for those interested in learning to play the great sport of footbag. Topics will include: the basic kicks and stalls, some advanced tricks, an overview of the scoring system, and a brief history and who's who of footbag. So come on out and learn to do with your feet what you can already do with your hands. I'm sure you'll like it.

Ryan Sanders

Multitasking for Jugglers: This workshop will focus on how to integrate many different types of juggling styles and props in order to create a more balanced juggler.

Wren Schultz

Just some guy.

Multiplexing: Charlie Dancey defines multiplexing as throwing two or more balls at once from one hand. It sounds simple but there are so many possibilities. In this workshop, we will start with the basics with 3 balls, move through more advanced tricks, and up to 4 and 5 ball patterns.

Bede Smith

A mind-body integrationist, Bede employs play to heal, to teach and to co-create innumerable good works, projects, and play. Bede is a freelance professional in several careers at which play can be used to encourage self-development. He is active as a Shiatsu Massage Practitioner, Creative Education Instructor, A'OK Clown, Juggler Extraordinaire, River Raft Guide and Naturalist at your service. Bede and life partner Denise have co-founded CEDAR the Creative Education in Developmental Arts and Resources project to further the development of the self through play and to facilitate creative education activities in diverse communities.

Healing Through Play: A hands on workshop. Share experiences and discuss healing applications of circus arts skills development. Topics to be touched upon include: Juggling using both sides of the brain, Free to be De A'OK Clown, Tranceform to animals and other wizardries, Fall back to Future Trust Circle, and learning to fly/safe with support.

Auric (Audi) Thoele

Techniques for Teaching Juggling: All jugglers eventually teach others to juggle. What we have learned are the best ways to teach juggling, especially to the student who doesn't get it immediately. This workshop will be a forum to share all the ideas I've learned through years of teaching and hear your ideas too. Together we can make a better juggling instruction.
