Ken and Paul needed easy access to a non-human powered testbed when developing and testing the self-steer software at HSU.  With limited funds, they decided to buy an off-the-shelf remote-controlled vehicle.  After hacking into the controls, they were left with a vehicle that could be controlled by a computer, thus creating the robot which they dubbed Monster Truck.
