Degree Programs

The Department of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration (K&RA) at Humboldt State University, located in the heart of the Redwoods in Northern California, has something for everyone. Inside and outside the classroom, our professors are dedicated to quality teaching and are committed to your academic success. In our department, smaller class sizes allow close collaboration. Daily contact with your teachers is as easy as dropping by their offices, or striking up a conversation in the Student Recreation Center. We owe our excellent reputation to high quality faculty and their commitment to provide a hands-on learning experience using the latest innovations and technology.

K&RA offers two undergraduate degree programs: a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, and a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Administration, each with options in specific areas of interest. The department also offers a Master of Science in Kinesiology. Once you have completed your degree in Kinesiology or Recreation Administration at Humboldt State, you will have much more than a diploma. You will be prepared to make the next step in the exciting career of your choice.

We Give Active Learning a Whole New Meaning

Studies in Kinesiology put your knowledge in motion. In any of our four degree options, what you learn in the classroom you will put to work through hands-on experience that gives you mastery of skills and technology along with your degree. Students in Teaching/Coaching work in local schools and recreation programs. Our Athletic Training Education and Pre-Physical Therapy students serve alongside certified professionals in their fields. And our Exercise Science/Wellness Management students do not just work in our state-of-the art labs, they help run them. The Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology offers options in the same areas as the undergraduate program.

Personalized, Real-World Education

At Humboldt State, we teach the business of recreation. You will earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Recreation Administration in one of four concentrations: outdoor adventure recreation, tourism management, community and youth recreation, or an option you design yourself. You will also complete a minor (or a "minor field of study," depending on how many courses you take) in business administration.

Getting a degree in something else?

Consider a minor in Kinesiology, Health or Recreation Administration, or a Certificate in Exercise Nutrition.

Want to do something to stay active, fit and healthy?

Sign up for one of several physical education courses. You can learn yoga, pilates, golf, fencing, or tai chi. Get fit in our weight training, aerobics of fitness swim class. Join an intramural team or a sports club. Take a health course or get involved in our Intramural and Sports Clubs programs.

Our Human Performance Laboratory and Movement Analysis Laboratory serve students, faculty, staff and community members with personalized fitness and performance programs. Regardless of which degree option you choose, you can be involved. And beginning in Spring 2008, we are taking it up a notch with all new facilities, including improved lab space, modernized classrooms, a new pool and gym, and much more.
