
Test Preparation
The Learning Center maintains a small library of test preparation materials for many standardized tests. For many of the exams, a lab assistant or staff member can go over the test preparation materials with you. Below is a list of the tests for which we provide materials and services.

| Graduate Writing Proficiency Exam (GWPE) |

Before Humboldt students can graduate,
they are required to pass the Graduate Writing Proficiency Exam (GWPE).
The exam requires essay responses to two writing prompts-each response
is allotted forty-five minutes. Students who wish to familiarize
themselves with the test format or improve their writing skills can
take advantage of our handouts and individual asistance.
The Learning Center offers a free two-hour GWPE Preparation Workshop every semester. The workshop covers prewriting techniques, general writing tips, and practice exam questions. Students can also meet individually with staff for additional writing assistance. If you are interested in attending the workshop or scheduling an appointment with a staff member, please contact us. | Law School Admission Test (LSAT) |

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
is the standardized test required for admission to all law schools
that are members of the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). It measures
reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools use as one of
several factors in assessing applicants. The Learning Center offers
test prep material in its in-house reference library.

| Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) |

The Graduate Management Admission Test
(GMAT) is the standardized test that helps business schools assess
the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and
management. The GMAT measures basic verbal, mathematical, and
analytical writing skills that students have developed over their
academic career. The Learning Center offers test prep material
in its in-house reference library as well as individualized help
with staff.

| Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) |

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
is the standardized test used by medical college admission committees
to assess applicants. Problem solving, critical thinking, and writing
skills, as well as the examinee's knowledge of science concepts and
principles required in the study of medicine are assessed. The sections
of the test include verbal reasoning, physical sciences, biological
sciences, and a writing sample. The Learning Center offers test preparation
material in its in-house reference library.

| California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) |

The California
Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) is one of the standardized
exams used for the credentialing of California teachers and other
educational personnel. The purpose of the CBEST is to assess proficiency
in reading, writing, and math skills. The CBEST measures
basic educational skills that are needed and used by professional
staff members in K-12 schools, as well as adult education. The
Learning Center offers preparation materials as well as individualized
assistance. Registration materials are available through the Testing
Center.

| California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) |

The
California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) is the standardized
test used for California teaching credentialing in single and multiple
subjects. The purpose of the test is to assess the knowledge of
each credential candidates in his or her chosen field of study.

| Entry Level Math (ELM) |

The Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) examination
is designed to assess the math skill levels of entering CSU students.
Students who are not assessed at college level will be directed to
courses or programs designed to improve math skills. The Learning
Center has preparation workbooks for review, as well as one-on-one
math help.

| English Placement Test (EPT) |

The English Placement Test (EPT) is designed
to assess the reading and writing skills of incoming undergraduate
students so that they can be placed in appropriate English courses.
Students not demonstrating college-level skills will be directed
to courses or programs designed to improve these skills. The Learning
Center offers one-on-one assistance in improving writing skills and
preparation for the EPT.

| Math Placement Test (MPT) |

The HSU Math Placement Test is a supplementary
placement exam for people who wish to test out of Pre-Calculus and
be able to take Calculus. It is appropriate for a small population
of students who, after taking and passing the test, will recieve
a Math Code of 50. Contact the Math

| High School Equivalency Diploma Exam (GED) |

The
General Educational Development Test (GED) measures examinees'
knowledge and academic skills against those of today's traditional
high school graduates. The GED assesses knowledge in language arts,
writing, social studies, science, reading, and mathematics. There
is also an essay portion of the test to assess examinees' communication
and writing skills. The Learning Center offers test preparation
materials in our in-house reference library as well as one-on-one
help for GED preparation.

| American College Test (ACT) |

The American College Test (ACT) is designed
to assess high school students' general educational development and
their ability to complete college-level work. The ACT is used as
an evaluator for undergraduate college admissions. The test covers
four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The
Learning Center offers test preparation materials in our in-house
reference library as well as one-on-one assistance in subject areas.
