Registration Information for New StudentsWelcome to Liberal Studies Elementary Education (LSEE)! I think you will be very happy with your choice of a major. I, Arianna Thobaben, am your Academic Advisor and I can be reached at amt7002@humboldt.edu or 707-826-3752. My office is in Harry Griffith Hall, across from the student services building, on the second floor in HGH 229B. I work 11 months and am not available for most of July and the beginning of August. I will be around the week before classes start in August. If you need to speak to someone during this time, please contact the advising center or Dr. Chris Hopper, the LSEE program Leader at, 707-826-3853, or drop by the Education and Credentialing office in HGH 202, and the staff there should be able to assist you. What you have to do now is figure out what classes to register for. First, view the LSEE major contract, (listed on the main web page as LSEE degree requirements); this is all the courses you will need to take to graduate with an LSEE degree. I will also have a copy of your degree contract in a file in my office where I will keep it updated as you progress towards your degree. The first page of this major contract lists the general education (GE) classes you need to take, and the actual major classes start on page two beginning with EDUC 110. You can see a listing of such GE classes in the first section of your HSU catalog. This catalog is also on-line. This year, the GE classes begin on page 53 of the catalog. At this time you should begin to put together a semester schedule. We recommend that you take from 15-18 units a semester to keep you on track to graduate in a timely fashion. Incoming freshman can sign up for the Freshman Interest Group (FIG) for elementary education as part Humboldt’s Orientation. This FIG includes a schedule of three general education classes where seats were held for you. Transfer students select classes to take from the second page of the major contract. Now that you see the classes you need, go to Humboldt’s main web page http://www.humboldt.edu/, hit on the quick links, and then view the class schedule. Here, hit on the subject you are interested in taking, find the class, and then view how many seats are open (keep track of the CRN numbers as you plan your schedule). If you are an upper division transfer student you may look at the 2 year plan to help you with your planning. Also, you should look to see what classes are offered fall only and plan accordingly. You may not be able to take classes in this order. This first semester, you just need to get into whatever open classes in your degree that you can. It doesn’t really matter the order you take them in as long as you take most of the fieldwork courses in order. Start by creating a schedule that includes the first few classes on this sheet: EDUC 110, EED 210/310 (your first fieldwork class that requires 45 hours of field work along with a 1 unit seminar). You must enroll in these at the same time. Next, try to enroll in CD 256 or PSYCH 213. Look next at ART 358, MUS 312, MATH 308B, ENG 326, and ECON 320. I have permission numbers for LSEE 311 (the class you take with Math 308B) if you need one. If you are having trouble finding open classes, choose a depth of study area. LSEE majors pick an area to focus in and take 3 classes in this area. Sometimes depth of study classes are open when others are not. Later you may decide to take a few additional classes in this area to make up a minor. Also, look at the Diversity Common Ground (DCG) classes listed in the one course from area in the middle of this contact. Usually there are spots available in this area: SOC 303, COMM 322, AIE 335, AIE 330, GEOG 304. Remember that LSEE majors DO NOT ENROLL IN UPPER DIVISION GENERAL EDUCATION classes. This requirement is embedded in the LSEE major. Now that you have created a schedule, it is time to enroll. To do this, hit on HSU’s web page http://www.humboldt.edu/, and then hit on the quick links and go to your student center, and log into this. You enter your student center with the first part of your Humboldt state e-mail address and a password you have selected. This student center is where you add/drop classes and view your enrollment time under enrollment dates option. I hope this process went smoothly for you. If you have any questions or would like me to look a the schedule you have created, please feel free to e-mail or call me. Welcome to LSEE!!! I look forward to working with you as you pursue your degree. Sincerely, Arianna |
