“Fabulous Fibonacci Numbers”
Behold, the Fibonacci numbers 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,…, a number sequence which has long fascinated scholars because of its frequent occurrence in art, architecture, music, magic, and nature. You may have read about them in Dan Brown’s novel The DaVinci Code. The next number of the sequence is generated by adding the two preceding numbers. This talk will exhibit many natural examples of Fibonacci numbers while exploring the unusual (and aesthetically pleasing) patterns of the sequence itself.

“Synchronicity: Alternating Sums, Exclusion, and Determinants”
“One of my goals is to understand identities involving sums of alternating terms by finding a correspondence between odd and even sets. Coincidentally, a colleague asked me about calculating a particular determinant combinatorially. When the answer ended up being related to the alternating identities, I was stunned. So just what is the connection between determinants, alternating sums and the Principle of Inclusion/Exclusion? Come and find out.”

In 1987 Dr. Quinn earned her MS in Pure Mathematics in Chicago from the University of Illinois and in 1993 received her Ph.D. in Combinatorics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She has been at Occidental College ever since, where she is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Math Department. She is the Associate Editor for Mathematics Magazine and Co-Editor of Math Horizons. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons.
