Chaos Games and Fractal Geometry
April 23, 1998 @ 8:00 P.M.
NR 101
Using a variety of chaos games, the Kieval Lecture
will explore how fractal images are
created, manipulated, and made into animations.
We'll challenge the audience to "Beat the Professor" in a chaos game or
two. And we'll discuss applications ranging from fractal moviemaking
in Hollywood to data compression.
Mathematics Department Colloquium
Colloquium: The Mandelbrot Set, the Farey
tree, and the Fibonacci Sequence
April 23, 1998 @ 4:00 p.m. NR 101
Tea @ 3:30 p.m. - outside Library 56
Abstract: In this talk we discuss the arithmetic and geometry
of the bulbs in the Mandelbrot set. We first show the visual relationship
between these bulbs and the Farey tree. Then we discuss how to make
these results rigorous using the external rays of Douady and Hubbard.
