“Math as Fiction, Fiction as Math”
The kinship, even twinship, of mathematics and music has been explored for thousands of years, from the Pythagoreans on Samos to researchers in magnetic brain scan labs. "Math and Art" exhibitions and festivals abound. But mathematics and fiction? The relations between these arts have been largely ignored. Yet, as I will explain, they are deeper and stronger than you might guess.

“3-D Penrose Tilings: Some Puzzling Problems”
The discovery of quasicrystals in 1984 generated a landslide of research in the mathematics of aperiodic order. As attention shifted from the concrete (e.g., the curious properties of Penrose and other aperiodic tiles) to the abstract (e.g., dynamical systems and model sets), interesting questions in 3-space were left behind. In this talk I will focus on three-dimensional analogues of Penrose tiles, including the first-ever set due to Robert Ammann, and review some unsolved problems they pose.
