Introduction to the Math Placement Tests

The HSU Math Placement Tests (MPT's) are designed to allow students to demonstrate their abilities in mathematics. The following tests are used for the purposes described below:
  • Part I A score of 15 or higher out of 20 allows a student to enroll in Math 44, Intermediate Algebra.
  • Part II A score of 15 or more allows a student to enroll in Math 115 or general education mathematics (100 level).
  • Part III A score of 15 or more allows a student to enroll in the first semester of calculus, either Math 109 or Math 105.

Effective June 1, 1998, students will not be permitted to take Part I or Part II of the Math Placement Test without first attending Math 46 Workshop for ELM and MPT Review. See the Schedule of Classes for dates/times. There is a $5.00 charge for aeach time you take the MPT. The test taking is arranged through the HSU Testing Center at 826-3611. Students must call or stop by to make an appointment. Scientific calculators are allowed, but not graphing calculators, calculators with alpha-numeric keys or lap- top computers.
