Service Learning Courses (1 unit each)

PHIL 392: “St. Mary’s School: Serving through Teaching”

See Complete Course Description

Description: HSU students will work with St. Mary’s School (K-8) students in any number of capacities: tutoring, teaching art or drama, making gift or care packages for the needy in our community, etc.  Students will need to contact Jim Monge, the Principal of St. Mary’s School, and he will coordinate efforts with teachers and staff so that a suitable placement for you at the school is secured.  Most likely, you will be working in one of the classrooms, under the supervision of one of the teachers.  You will also need to identify and understand the ethical (philosophical) principles that underlie the school’s philosophy and that motivate this kind of service learning.  Some reading and video viewing will be required, as well as a one page write up that discusses your experience and its moral significance.  12 hours total.

PHIL 392: “4-H Riding Therapy: Serving the Disabled”

See Complete Course Description

Description: HSU students will volunteer at “Camelot”, a local 4-H Trail organization and stable that provides “hippotherapy”, or riding therapy to disabled individuals (mainly children).  Hippotherapy helps improve balance, coordination and self-esteem by stretching, massaging, stimulating and challenging riders who have special needs.  Learning to ride and control a horse can improve a child’s self-control, self-discipline, concentration, and sense of independence and self-awareness.  Both rider and volunteer in this program also develop a strong sense of responsibility.  HSU volunteers help on “care days” to groom horses, to care for their stalls and the grounds, and on “trail days” to assist in leading the horses and supporting the riders.  Students will also work with the instructor to identify and understand the ethical (philosophical) principles that underlie and motivate this community service.  Some reading and video viewing will be required, as well as a one page write up that discusses your experience and its moral significance.  12 hours total.
