Online Manual: Assignments

The the Assignment feature allows you to create assignments on your Moodle page that are either offline or online. An assignment is defined as a task with a due date and a maximum grade. There are several types of assignments which will be discussed in the text below.

From the Course Menu:

  1. Chose the desired section for the lesson, and Turn editing on.
  2. Click the Add an activity tab to the right of the desired section and choose Assignment.
  3. Give the Assignment a name in the Name field.
  4. Give the Assignment a decription in the Description field.
  5. Choose the Assignment type from the drop down menu.
  6. Complete the rest of the desired settings, for more information see below.
  7. Click Save changes.

Types of Assignments:

  1. Offline activity: This is useful when the assignment is performed outside of Moodle. It could be something elsewhere on the web or face-to-face. Students can see a description of the assignment, but can't upload files or anything. Grading works normally, and students will get notifications of their grades.
  2. Online text: This assignment type asks users to edit a text, using the normal editing tools. Teachers can grade them online, and even add inline comments or changes. (If you are familiar with older versions of Moodle, this Assignment type does the same thing as the old Journal module used to do.) *Note that presently you need to use the Journal tool for Online text assignments. These will be available as part of the assignment module in Summer 2006.
  3. Upload & Review: This assignment type allows the students to upload multiple files of any type. The teacher can then view the files and upload a review or response file to that students submission. This review can be a digital corrected version of the assignment, requests for changes, etc.
  4. Upload a single file: This type of assignment allows each participant to upload a single file, of any type. This might be a Word processor document, or an image, a zipped web site, or anything you ask them to submit.

Assignment Settings :

  1. Assignment type: There are different types of assignments: Offline activity - this is useful when the assignment is performed outside of Moodle. Students can see a description of the assignment, but can't upload files or anything. Teachers can grade all students though, and students will see notifications of their grades. Upload a single file - this type of assignment allows all students to upload a single file, of any type. This might be a Word processor document, or an image, a zipped web site, or anything you ask them to submit. Teachers can grade submitted assignments online.
  2. Allow re-sending of assignment: By default, students cannot resubmit assignments once the teacher has graded them. If you turn this option on, then students will be allowed to resubmit assignments after they have been graded (for you to re-grade). This may be useful if the teacher wants to encourage students to do better work in an iterative process. Obviously, this option is not relevant for offline assignments.
  3. Grade: You have the option of not giving a grade, giving the assignment a regular point grade, from 1 to 100, or any number below 1000 if you use the "Custom Grade" option. For more information, click here.
  4. Custom Grade: Click on the checkbox or select Custom Grade from the Grade dropdown menu to see the custom grade textfield, then enter the desired grade.
