The Quiz module allows the teacher to design and set quiz tests, consisting of multiple choice, true-false, short answer questions etc. These questions are kept in a categorized database, and can be re-used within courses and even between courses. Quizzes can allow multiple attempts. Each attempt is automatically marked, and the teacher can choose whether to give feedback or to show correct answers.
From the Course Menu:
- Chose the desired section for the lesson, and Turn editing on.
- Click the Add an activity tab to the right of the desired section and choose Quiz.

More Information
- Q: I have created a Quiz, but the students cannot see it.
- A: Under the Course Menu, click Turn Editing on. Now, check to see if the eye symbol next to the quiz is open or closed. In order for your students to view it and take it, the eye must be open. To change whether the quiz is hidden or not, simply click on the eye once.
- Q: How do I view grades?
- A: When students take a test in Moodle, their score is automatically entered in the Gradebook. If you want to view a student’s individual question responses, click on their score in the Gradebook. You can edit student scores in the gradebook directly, however if you are allowing the students to take the quiz multiple times (for formative assessments or drill and practice) then you should wait until the quiz is closed before modifying grades in the gradebook.
- Q: How do I grade the essay questions?
- A: From the Quiz, access the student's test results by clicking on the Grade Essays tab. Click on the essay question you wish to grade; this will show you the student's individual answers. Now choose the student you wish to grade. Now you may add comments and also give a % score. When finished, click Save.
- Q: How do I turn off the Quiz when I no longer want students to be able to take it?
- A: Simply hide the test using the "eye" when Editing is on. Also, you can make your quiz available for a certain amount of time on a certian day. Do this by clicking on the quiz, then in the upper right hand corner click the button that says Update this Quiz. Under the section Open the quiz and Close the quiz, choose the time and date you wish the quiz to be available for.
Quizzes and other activities can be set to be shown or hidden on particular dates and times by using the "Program Visibility" tool in the Control Panel. - Q: How secure are on-line Quizzes? How can I make them more secure?
- A: Anytime you give a student a test, you run the risk of cheating. At this time, there is no way to make sure that your student is the one actually taking the test. This does not mean that the test feature in Moodle should not be used. To increase test security you can add passwords, randomize questions, put time limits on tests, or administer them in a proctored lab environment. A good use of the test feature in Moodle is for practice or review tests and formative assessments. This is an especially good use for the Allow Multiple Attempts, grade on the average or highest grade, the random sampling and calculated questionl features.
