NOTE: when converting documents, special characters and some types of formatting will be lost. Typically, superscripting, subscripting, formulas, and footnotes will be lost because HTML code can't handle this type of formatting. Any sound and/or animation will also be lost when converting your presentation to HTML. If it is critical that audio be included with your presentation, please contact the Courseware Development Center for instructions on creating a work-around.
Converting PowerPoint 2000 (PC) Documents
Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 documents can often be identified by a .ppt extension (e.g. presentation.ppt).
- Create a new folder on your desktop. This folder should have a descriptive name, such as lecture1, and should not have any spaces within the name.
- From within your Presentation, choose the Save As Web Page option from the File menu. If this option is not visible, choose Save As
- From the Save In drop down menu, choose your newly created folder.
- In the File Name: section, name your file and remember to include the .html extension.
-
Figure 1. Save as HTML
Choose Web Page (*.htm; *.html) from the Save as type: drop down menu (Figure 1). NOTE: DOS naming conventions are required when saving HTML documents. These files cannot have any spaces, slashes, or hyphens in their names but underscores are acceptable. A three or four letter extension is also necessary for the file to be uploaded and read correctly. - Click the Save button or complete
the following steps if this is the first time that you have saved
a PowerPoint presentation as HTML on this computer. Once
you have done this, the correct settings will be considered the defaults
for this computer
Figure 2. Publish
- Click the Publish button.
-
Change the Browser support option shown in the center of the window. Choose the middle option Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later (Figure 2).
-
Click the Web Options button.
- In the Web Options window, click on the Pictures tag.
- From the Screen size drop down menu, choose 800 x 600 and click OK.
Your presentation will be saved in your new folder. The HTML version will consist of a document and another folder. The document will be titled "your presentation name.htm" and the folder will be called "your presentation name_files". For example, if you name your HTML file "presentation.htm" and you save it in a newly created folder named lecture1, then the lecture1 folder will have the file "presentation.htm" and folder "presentation_files". These two items (presentation.htm and presentation_files) must stay in the same folder (lecture1) and must be the only items in the folder in order to Zip them up for upload into Blackboard.
