RESOLUTION AGAINST HATE ON THE HSU CAMPUS

Whereas The California Education Code entitles students to a safe environment, free from harassment, discrimination etc; and

Whereas The California Education Code stipulates that if the above rights are abridged, the University is mandated to administer educational programming to deter hate incidents; and

Whereas Over the course of the past two semesters, reported incidents of Hate have increased on the HSU campus; and

Whereas Past attempts that have been made to curtail Hate incidents on campus such as the Campus Climate Committee and the Anti-hate campaign following the events of September 11th are not bringing about the desired effect; and

Whereas Humboldt State University students are not being provided the appropriate forums to broaden their perspectives to allow them to become more effective allies of hate incident survivors; and

Whereas This lack of educational process has fostered an environment where many students question the safety and integrity of the University; and

Whereas HSU has not hired the Director if Diversity and Compliance Programs and the Student Affairs Office has not adequately fulfilled the responsibilities of the said position; therefore be it

Resolved The Office of Student Affairs must provide appropriate educational programming facilitated by professional staff (not survivors) to address the aforementioned issues; be it further

Resolved That the Associated Students of Humboldt State University demand that a Director of Diversity and Compliance Programs is hired immediately; be it further

Resolved That the Associated Students of Humboldt State University demand a plan of action from the Vice President of Student Affairs Office regarding the establishment of educational programming; be it further

Resolved That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University stand in solidarity with the Associated Students and survivors of hate incidents by passing a similar resolution demanding that these issues be addressed and resolved by the Administration; be it further

Resolved Copies of this resolution be sent to President McCrone, Vice President of Student Affairs, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Department Chairs, University Police Department, Chairperson of Campus Climate Committee, the California State Student Association, Chancellor Reed and the Board of Trustees
