Concerto/Aria

The HSU Concerto/Aria competition is held each year in the middle of the Fall semester. Students perform before an audience of students, members of the community, and a panel of judges. Three winners are selected - one vocalist, one instrumentalist, and one pianist. One of these three is named the Overall Winner; during the Spring semester, this student performs the winning composition with either the Humboldt Symphony or the Symphonic Band.

CONCERTO/ARIA AUDITION: RULES AND REGULATIONS
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2003, 2:00 P.M. FULKERSON RECITAL HALL

1. The composition to be performed must be cleared with the conductor of the accompanying ensemble prior to the application date.

2. The Music Department will hold annual Concerto/Aria auditions during the Fall Semester. The winner will perform later that year with either the Humboldt Symphony or the Symphonic Band.

3. Past overall winners of the Concerto/Aria competition may not apply again. In addition, any category winner (who was not an overall winner) who was invited to perform his competition concerto or aria on a Humboldt Symphony
or Symphonic Band concert may not apply again.

4. The audition is open to all Humboldt State University students registered in studio performance studies and taking a minimum of 6.0 (six) units during the semester of both the audition and the performance (if chosen). The student must be enrolled in lessons on the instrument/voice upon which he will perform in the competition or have the approval of the appropriate studio teacher.

5. In accordance with professional practice, the work must be performed from memory at the time of the audition, and if chosen, for the concert except when an exception is approved by the Concert Committee in advance of the application deadline.

6. The work performed at the audition will be the one performed on the concert, if chosen. There will be no substitution. The selection will be performed in its entirety (minus any planned cuts) at the audition including cadenza(s), in final form.

7. The auditionee will perform one movement (or two connected movements) of a concerto (or concert piece) or one aria not to exceed 15 (fifteen) minutes in total length. If the selection exceeds the time limit, the auditionee will automatically be disqualified.

8. Accompaniment in the form of orchestra keyboard reduction is required for the audition. The entire accompaniment must be performed at the audition with the exception of an introductory double exposition, which may be cut. However, the 15-minute time maximum timing includes the double exposition. If a winning performance is later determined to be over 15 minutes with introductory double exposition, that winning performer may be disqualified.
9. The auditionee must provide his/her own accompanist at his or her own expense.

10. The orchestra accompaniment must be readily available and cost less than $350.00 to obtain. If a winner's orchestral accompaniment is not already in the HSU library or is not available for the above price, the winner will either:
A. be held responsible for the excess charge, or
B. be disqualified from performing.

11. One performer will be named the winner from each of the following categories: keyboard, instrumental, and vocal. From these three, the judges will select one overall winner who will perform with the Humboldt Symphony or the Symphonic Band. The other two winners may have the opportunity to perform in a reading session at a rehearsal of the accompanying ensemble. The judges may also select deserving students for honorable mention. If, in the judges opinion, none of the performers from a particular category is deserving, the judges have the option of declaring no winner in that category.

12. It shall be the responsibility of the winner chosen to be available for rehearsals as required as well as all performances.

13. It shall be the responsibility of the auditionee to submit the complete and accurate application form to the Music Department office not later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, October 21, 2002.

14. The audition adjudicators will be selected by the Music Department faculty in consultation with the Concert Committee. Any HSU Music Department faculty member who has a studio lesson individual participating in the auditions may NOT be an adjudicator. The Concert Committee will act ex-officio throughout the audition process.

15. The Director of the Humboldt Symphony or Symphonic Band will determine on which program the winner will perform.
