Soprano
Elisabeth Harrington begins an exciting journey as Assistant Professor
of Voice at Humboldt State this year. She will teach Studio Voice, Class
Voice, Lyric Diction, and Direct the Opera Workshop. She earned the
DMA in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado-Boulder,
where she was a teaching assistant for the Opera Department, a scholarship
recipient and, for two years, Lead TA in Music Performance for CU-Boulder's
nationally acclaimed Graduate Teacher Program.
Prior to returning to school, Elisabeth maintained a private voice studio
and active performing schedule in North Carolina. She taught voice at
the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill for eight years. She earned
the B. A. in Music and Anthropology from that same institution in 1991,
and in 1995, completed the M. M. in Voice Performance at the University
of North Carolina-Greensboro, her native city.
Her opera performing credits include Norina (Don Pasquale), Frasquita
(Carmen), Rose Maurrant (Street Scene), and Mrs. Grose (The Turn of
The Screw) as well as two seasons with the Aspen Music Festival Opera
Theater and one as a Sarasota Opera Apprentice Artist. In 1996 she was
chosen as a North Carolina District Winner for the Metropolitan Opera
National Council Auditions. She has appeared in several musical theater
productions, attended numerous acting workshops and has taught acting
for singers for several years.
A regular recitalist, Elisabeth enjoys performing (and teaching) many
different styles of vocal music. She sang and played flute in a blues
and bluegrass band for five years. In addition, her early exposure to
global music as an Anthropology student has sparked a lifelong interest
in exploring how music is manifested in diverse cultures. Her most recent
academic pursuits include studies of Baroque vocal ornamentation (Vivaldi,
in particular) and the development of the American art song.
