MUSIC MAJOR

The music curriculum at HSU is divided into a core of courses that are required of all majors and four options.

A. Prerequisites
A certain level of pre-university preparation is expected upon entrance to the music major. There are courses in the curriculum designed for students who need remedial work in specific areas:
Music Theory: MUS 110 Fundamentals of Music
Piano: MUS 112 Piano 1 and MUS 113 Piano 2
Music History: MUS 104 Introduction to Music (GE credit also)
Applied Lessons: MUS 108 and 109 Beginning Instruments or Voice,
MUS 355, 357 and 386 Intermediate Instruction

2.3 General Option
No audition is required for entrance to the General Option

Five semesters of group or individual applied instruction
chosen from 220-237 (420-437 by advisement). Students
may substitute 108,109, 355, 357 by advisement 5

Two semesters of ensemble participation 106/406, 107/407 2
(Pianists may take Mus. 353 Accompanying for one semester)

All performance majors must perform a Senior Recital. Pianists must also perform a Junior Recital.
