SUMMER 2007

California Natural History Institutes
NMSI offered two one-week institutes.  The Natural History of Northwest California institutes were held: July 16-20 (Week 1) and July 23-27 (Week 2).  These institutes bring together teachers, university faculty and park interpretive staff to examine the connections between geology, biology, and human use of environments.  An important goal of this program is to develop a rich sense of place based knowledge about natural history based on experiences in the field, literature reading, digital media and journaling.

EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS CONFERENCE

NMSI co-sponsored this festival which took place March 17, 2007 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Bayshore Mall in Eureka. Goals of the event were to celebrate the richness of mathematics in a hands-on community event; inform, illustrate, instruct, and inspire students, parents and community members how mathematics weaves through cultures, history, art, science, careers and so much more; and to foster and share enthusiasm and appreciation of mathematics.  For more information follow the link:

FALL 2006

Evolution and Adaptation: Teaching For Understanding
October 19-21, 2006

This nine hour mini-university course was offered in San Francisco during the California Science Teachers Association Conference, October 19-22. The course focused on evolution and adaptation and instructional strategies to foster understanding among K–6 students. Development of thinking skills was a primary goal. Specific topics included the interplay between inheritance and evolution, speciation and extinction, evolutionary trees, and evidence for evolution. 1/2-unit of credit was available for the mini-university course. California Natural History Institutes for Secondary Teachers

Workshop:  Essentials of Algebra 1
The goals of this workshop were:  1) to determine the essential concepts and skills
necessary in an Algebra 1 program as determined by California Standards Test and High School Exit Exam; and 2) to enhance a school's present Algebra 1 curriculum with activities, manipulatives and skills that make the concepts more accessible to all students.

Algebra Institute for Teachers of English Language Learners/English Language Development (ELL/ELD)
The goal of the Mathematics Institute for teachers of English Language Learners is to provide teachers with second language acquisition methodology while simultaneously assisting English language development by increasing students’ mathematical content knowledge through the implementation of ELD strategies, ELD standards - based instruction, content based instruction, and the integration of language learning techniques. Focus of the institutes is middle school and high school teachers who teach pre-algebra and algebra content/CPM.

LESSON STUDY WEEK AT HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY — August 1 to 5, 2005

Introduction to Lesson Study Workshop August 1
This workshop focused on the teacher-led process of school-based instructional improvement known as Lesson Study. All subject areas were welcome although examples focused on science and mathematics. Teachers, future teachers, college faculty, and administrators were welcome to attend--subject to seat availability. ˝ unit of course credit available. Workshop Fee: $125/Teachers; $75/Future Teachers. Lunch and materials included. For science and math teachers a stipend of $100/day (or $75/day for future teachers) is available. Lesson Study Invitational Institute  August 2-5, 2005
This institute is designed for both first time and currently practicing Lesson Study teams in science and mathematics. The institute begins with the Lesson Study Workshop (above) on August 1. This will be followed by Lesson Study teamwork aimed at goal setting and development of a unit of study. It is anticipated that a solid portion of the Lesson Study cycle will be competed by the end of the institute. Follow-up work will include the Research Lesson and LS reflection. Institute meets 7 hours per day. A commitment to completing the LS cycle during the AY-05/06 is needed. Those who have already completed introductory training may join the institute after the workshop. Institute Fee: $50/Teachers; $25/Future Teachers. Lunch is included. For science and math teachers a stipend of $100/day (or $75/day for future teachers) is available. Others may also be eligible for a stipend.

Math Tutoring Techniques – July 11-15 for FUTURE TEACHERS
The College of the Redwoods EDUC 3 course (EDUC 3), Math Tutoring Techniques, is being offered at the Humboldt County Office of Education in Eureka this summer. In this course, the focus is on developing a variety of math tutoring skills, including coaching, mentoring, appropriate use of manipulative materials, and supporting metacognitive analysis regarding basic computation and procedural skills necessary for a higher level of conceptual understanding. Students will learn how to implement appropriate tutoring techniques for small groups and individual children from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. This course is ideal for individuals preparing to become teachers or teacher aides.

This institute will focus on the foundations of inorganic chemistry contained in the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools: Kindergarten through Grade Twelve (1998), from an advanced standpoint. The conceptual basis of these topics will be explored as well as an examination of common misconceptions by students. Institute format will include demonstrations and hands-on activities in small group settings, special lectures, and discussion. Materials will be provided.

CSET Preparation Workshop for the Foundational Level Mathematics Credential

For TEACHERS & FUTURE TEACHERS
This 1-unit course course will help you prepare for the CSET in Mathematics, specifically Part I: Algebra and Number Theory, and Part II: Geometry and Probability/Statistics. You should have finished with your mathematics content (or be close to finishing) courses before you enroll in this course. Course Content includes Topic Review (Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry, and Probability and Statistics), and Practice Test Analysis.

Probability and Statistics—June 14 and 15 
This College of the Redwoods Math 99 course is being offered at the Mendocino Coast Campus in Fort Bragg, and will cover some of the central ideas of Probability and Statistics as related to the California Mathematics Standards and those aspects of the topics covered on the CSET Single Subject Foundational Math test. In this class a variety of ways K-12 teachers can incorporate probability and statistics ideas into their grade-level assignments will be explored.

Exploring FunctionsAugust 9-11
This College of the Redwoods Math 99 course will be an exciting math professional development course exploring a variety of ways of expressing functions. Function Concepts are a central idea in 3rd - 12th grade mathematics and an important component of the CSET Single Subject Foundational Math test.

SPRING 2004

Math for Middle School Teachers (CR Math 99)—Spring term 
In this course, the focus is on algebraic and statistics topics that are relevant to the middle school math curriculum. This course is designed to improve comprehension and skills of mathematics instructors that teach grades 5th through 9th but is not exclusive to that audience. Material covered will be appropriate for all individuals interested in mathematics education and advancing their content skills. The content will be taken from the grade specific NTCM standards as well as the California State Standards in Algebra and Statistics. The class will assist in meeting the California High Objective Uniform State Standard Of Evaluation (HOUSSE) requirements for NCLB.
