Current State of the Waterfront Trail, II
Welcome to the "newest section of the City's Waterfront
Trail," as Mayor Nancy Flemming calls it.
When the new section of Waterfront Drive was constructed
between Commercial and 14th streets, Eureka ignored its own policies
by (a) not providing proper sidewalks on both sides of the new
street and (b) not striping bike lanes along the new street.
It may be noted that the City's Public Works Dept. is currently "considering"
cycling options in the area.
As you can see is the above slide, this lone sidewalk
is (a) narrow and (b) crowded full of impediments to safe and convenient
travel. Sign poles and fire hydrants are placed too far towards the
center of the sidewalk. This condition is worst between the railroad
warning barrier and telephone pole where travel is especially constricted.
Continuing south from this location, the Waterfront Trail
might be included in the railroad right-of-way which would provided
ample space for its width. Sidewalks should be added to this section
and extended south, as well as bikelanes in each direction, as called
for in City planning documents.
