Mouth of the Elk River
Just south of Truesdale Vista the Elk River flows into Humboldt
Bay from the depths of the Headwaters Forest. River otters can sometime
be seen at dusk. The tip of the spit is also a popular avian hangout.
Shorebirds, cormorants, pelicans, and gulls all utilize the area actively.
The pilings seen in this slide were formerly used to support
pipes pumping gasoline from tankers parked on the other side of the spit.
Public access was previously provided across these same pilings.
