Looking south into the fog
At the southern end of the Wildlife Refuge the Waterfront Trail would
cross the Elk River to provide access to the Elk River Spit and provide
connectivity with the Humboldt Bay Trails Network which would continue
south to Humboldt Hill, Fields Landing, and beyond.
Additionally trail connectivity would link into the southern outlet of
a Gulch Trail Network. Such a linkage would provide a continuous
loop back to the northern end of the Waterfront Trail at the Eureka Slough.
Currently, public access to this area is provided off Herrick
Avenue from Pound Road. The Refuge's northern entrance is assessable by
Hilfiker Lane.
Positioned at Eureka's southern gateway, this area could provide
visitors their first welcome to the city, both visually and informatively.
A visitor center for both Eureka and the larger Humboldt Bay Area
would serve to capture travelers who normally only pass through the immediate
area.
These visitors are generally aware of the world famous redwood trees
north and south of here, but have little knowledge about Central Humboldt
County and the unique opportunities which are available here.
Pre-education before visitors pass through the Broadway and 4th/5th
strip mall and general clutter is essential if folks are to be expected
to find their way into Old Town and elsewhere.
