Excellence in teaching and research are hallmarks of the faculty in the Department of Psychology at HSU.
Faculty members are drawn to the university by its stellar reputation for quality instruction, smaller classes,
and excellent students, as well as the scenic beauty of a campus nestled between a redwood forest and the
Pacific Ocean.
The Department of Psychology at HSU offers an undergraduate major leading to the B.A. degree, a minor program,
course options for general education requirements and electives, service courses for other majors, and three
active graduate programs leading to the M.A. degree, including preparation for the
California School Psychology Credential,
and preparation for licensure as a
Marriage Family Therapist (MFT).
**New!!**
Dr. Mary Gruber
is retiring! The Psychology Department is hosting a farewell party after 34 years of service to HSU.
Everyone is invited to attend
on Tuesday, May 13th in BSS 416.
The School Psychology Program at HSU has made an unprecedented
decision to reopen our admission process for the fall 2008 admission cycle. For nearly 20 years, the program has maintained
an application deadline of February 15 for admission into the fall cohort. With the university facing fiscal challenges
brought about by the state budget crisis, we want to make certain that we are doing our part to use resources allotted to
us efficiently. As a small program, we usually admit no more than 10 – 12 students a year. For fall 2008, we will consider
accepting a total of as many as 15 new students, and are looking for a few strong candidates to join what we believe will
be an outstanding incoming class. If you missed this year’s deadline, this is a unique opportunity to apply to what we
believe is one of the strongest rural training programs for school psychologists in the nation.
We will accept new applications until August 1 or until we have accepted a full cohort. Contact
Diane Hunt,Graduate Secretary for more information or
go to the School Psychology web site.
The 2007 Psychology Department Newsletter is now online! See what your ol' friends
and faculty in Psychology have been up to.
The Psychology Undergraduate Curriculum Committee has revamped its major program to give students more opportunity to take a wider variety of courses.
Students following the "old" major will continue with their program unless they choose to follow the new major. See the
Undergraduate Studies page for more information.
The Psychology Fall 2008 Schedule of
Classes is available. Registration for summer and fall begins on April 1st so schedule an appointment with your advisor now! (For
those of you with Dr. Howe as your advisor, there is a sign on her door.)
We will not be offering any summer classes.
Fourteen faculty members and up to 15 part-time lecturers teach courses in almost every area of psychology,
with an emphasis on theory and research. Basic areas include learning, perception, cognition, developmental
psychology, psychobiology, social psychology, personality theory, abnormal psychology, research methods and
statistics. Other courses cover psychological perspectives on prejudice, religion, women, career development,
counseling techniques, stress and wellness, drug abuse, human sexuality, organizational/industrial psychology,
a senior seminar, and other content in psychology.
The Students
The department has approximately 400 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate students. The Associated Psychology
Students, or Psychology Club, is a campus-recognized club
open to all majors. We host a chapter of
Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology majors
which is active in sponsoring events and providing information to students in psychology. The department is
known for friendly relations between faculty, staff and students. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor,
and office hours and informal contacts with professors are readily available.
The department is fortunate to have an excellent staff to assist students, faculty, and persons from
the community. The department staff includes the
Department Coordinator and
Graduate Secretary.
The department office in room 410 of the new Behavioral and Social Sciences Building (BSS) is open year-round and can be reached at (707-826-3755)
