PSYC LOGO 1 Excellence in teaching and research are hallmarks of the faculty in the Department of Psychology at HSU. Faculty members are drawn to the university by its stellar reputation for quality instruction, smaller classes, and excellent students, as well as the scenic beauty of a campus nestled between a redwood forest and the Pacific Ocean.

The Department of Psychology at HSU offers an undergraduate major leading to the B.A. degree, a minor program, course options for general education requirements and electives, service courses for other majors, and three active graduate programs leading to the M.A. degree, including preparation for the California School Psychology Credential, and preparation for licensure as a Marriage Family Therapist (MFT).

**New!!**

Due to the current fiscal crisis facing the University, the Psychology Department has made a decision to not admit new students to our Counseling and School Psychology Graduate options for the Fall 2010 admission cycle. We will continue to accept applications for our Academic Research M.A. Program. An offer of admission is a contract between a student and the university that we will be able to offer courses necessary to complete a degree, and we simply do not have the faculty and fiscal resources to make this long-term commitment to new students. We will instead devote our resources to offering courses for current students, while planning to streamline and reconstruct both programs to be more efficient while also responding to recent legislative mandates to redesign our Counseling option.

This decision represents a 1-year hiatus in admissions, and is NOT a suspension or cancellation of either program. We expect to be able to admit students beginning again for Fall 2011, and look forward to announcing details regarding application deadlines as early as this summer. This is the first time in the more than 30-year history of both programs that we are unable to admit students, and the decision was difficult and painful for faculty. We know that this will cause disruptions for many outstanding students who have already applied or were planning to do so, and for this we are truly sorry. If you have questions or need additional details, please contact Psychology Department Graduate Secretary Diane Hunt [(707) 826-5264; diane.hunt@humboldt.edu], program faculty, or myself.

Fourteen faculty members and up to 15 part-time lecturers teach courses in almost every area of psychology, with an emphasis on theory and research. Basic areas include learning, perception, cognition, developmental psychology, psychobiology, social psychology, personality theory, abnormal psychology, research methods and statistics. Other courses cover psychological perspectives on prejudice, religion, women, career development, counseling techniques, stress and wellness, drug abuse, human sexuality, organizational/industrial psychology, a senior seminar, and other content in psychology.

The Students
The department has approximately 400 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate students. The Associated Psychology Students, or Psychology Club, is a campus-recognized club open to all majors. We host a chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology majors which is active in sponsoring events and providing information to students in psychology. The department is known for friendly relations between faculty, staff and students. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor, and office hours and informal contacts with professors are readily available.

The department is fortunate to have an excellent staff to assist students, faculty, and persons from the community. The department staff includes the Department Coordinator and Graduate Secretary.

The department office in room 410 of the new Behavioral and Social Sciences Building (BSS) is open year-round and can be reached at (707-826-3755)
