Psychology Department Clinic

The HSU Student and Community Counseling Clinic is a university-based training facility for graduate students in the Counseling Psychology master’s degree program at HSU. Licensed faculty in the Department of Psychology supervise all students. The HSU Student and Community Counseling Clinic also serves as a training setting for graduate students in the School Psychology Program, where students learn interviewing and therapy skills. Graduate students in the Counseling Psychology Program typically provide direct services to clients from the community and HSU.

The clinic consists of four therapy and interview rooms, a waiting room, videotape equipment and playback room, and office space for the Director and several faculty members from the Department of Psychology. Because the clinic is a university training center, most rooms have mounted video cameras for recording sessions so that faculty can review and provide feedback to trainees. The HSU Student and Community Counseling Clinic operates in accordance with the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association.

The HSU Student and Community Counseling Clinicis designed to be a low-cost source for counseling and psychotherapy services. The cost is based on a sliding fee scale, ranging from $5 to $25 per session, determined by financial need. The clinic is open Monday through Wednesday, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm and Thursdays 1:00 pm - 7:00pm. Because the clinic is staffed by HSU Psychology faculty and graduates students, it operates on the HSU academic schedule and is closed during holidays and breaks when HSU is not in regular session. The HSU Student and Community Counseling Clinic is not open during the summer months.

We see individuals, couples, families, adolescents, and children. Group counseling for adults is sometimes available. The clinic serves the entire community (Humboldt County) as well as students at HSU. Clients may be referred to the HSU Student and Community Counseling Clinic or just come in during clinic hours or call for an appointment. In the event that the clinic cannot meet the client’s needs, we will assist to make the appropriate referral.

More information can be obtained from Dr. Lou Ann Wieand, Director of HSU Student and Community Counseling Clinic (826-5265), or Ms. Diane Hunt (826-3921), Davis House receptionist.
