Brief Biography:
Dr. Brent Duncan received his graduate training in Educational and School Psychology at
the University of California, Berkeley (M.A. 1981, Ph.D. 1986). Dr Duncan has been at
HSU since 1990, and is currently a Professor of Psychology and Director of the California
and NASP approved graduate program in school psychology. Before coming to HSU, he was
coordinator of the APA approved doctoral program in school psychology at his alma mater
(UC Berkeley). Prior to graduate school, he earned an elementary teaching credential at
Dominican College, where he also majored in Psychology as an undergraduate.
Dr. Duncan has more than 25 years of experience as a school psychologist and teacher in
urban, suburban, and rural locations, and in public, private and university settings. Much
of his work has involved the interface of schools with the Mental Health system. He spent
3 years as Director of Educational Services for a Bay Area Community-Based Residential
Treatment facility for adolescents and young adults with serious emotional problems, and
three years responsible for programs and services for children and youth with serious
emotional difficulties within the Vallejo School District.
Dr. Duncan is immediate Past-President of the California Association of School Psychologists
(CASP), having served as President in 2002 – 2003. He has been on the Board of Directors of
CASP for the past ten years, having served as Research Chair and elected member of the
Executive Board representing northwest California. He has represented California school
psychologists in legislative and administrative discussions and hearings involving special
education services, credentialing standards and many other critical issues during the past
decade. He is an Associate Editor of the CASP Journal The California School Psychologist.
From 1992 – 1995, Dr. Duncan was elected to the Board of Directors for the Redwood Coast
Regional Center, serving as Board President from 1994 – 1995.
