BIOCHEMISTRY EXERCISES

The following are some computer/web based exercises I have developed which will hopefully be of use in your mastering certain aspects of biochemistry. These exercises are best viewed with Netscape™ 3.01 or later.

The Excel™ based exercises were written for Microsoft Office 98 on the Mac (available in all campus Mac labs). Since Microsoft makes minor (but sometimes very confusing) changes with every version of Excel you may need to modify the exercises if you use a different version, or if you use a different spreadsheet.

The modelling exercises use Chime, a free plug-in. If you are at home you can down-load Chime (instructions in first exercise.

• Introduction to pH, Titration Curves, and Buffers: This is an Excel™ based exercise. It includes detailed instructions for using Excel, so if you are not familiar with spread sheets this can also serve as an introduction.
  • Introduction to pH, . . : Answers to questions.
• An Introduction to Molecular Models and Computer Visualization of Amino Acids Using Chime: This is a web based exercise on modeling small molecules using models created and maintained by Dr. William McClure in the Biology Department of Carnegie-Mellon University. You will need ball & stick models and CPK models which may be checked out from the stockroom.
• WWW Visualization of Protein Structure Using Chime: This is a web based exercise on visualizing macromolecules using models created and maintained by Dr. William McClure in the Biology Department of Carnegie-Mellon University.
• Introduction to Enzyme Kinetics: This is an Excel™ based exercise.
