MUSEUM WORK (Exhibits, Installations, Web Museums, etc.)

  1. Docent, Clark Museum, Eureka, CA. (1982-1986). Cleaned and cataloged antique tool collection.
  2. Frogs an exhibit of photographs I have taken of exotic and unusual anurans (HSU Library, 1982.)
  3. Antique Hand Woodworking Tools. an exhibit of tools from the Clark Museum and private collections illustrating the development of hand tools in the Nineteenth Century. (HSU Library, 1984).
  4. HSU Chemistry Department Periodic display of the elements. Co-designed and installed with John B. Russell. A Periodic table with display specimens of all of the non-radioactive elements in the hall of Science A at HSU. (1995).
  5. The HSU Chemistry Department Scientific Instrument Virtual Museum, featuring approximately 20 instruments from the period of 1920-1935 was created and placed on the web. The museum was organized as a three-column table with a digitized photo, a descriptive title, and a scanned catalog description for each instrument. The descriptive tiles were also linked to individual pages including descriptions, paragraphs on usage, etc. (Spring 1997)
  6. The HSU Chemistry Department Scientific Instrument Museum site was reorganized, and two additional categories added to cover the periods of 1936-1953 and 1954-1970. For the earliest period, Humboldt State Teachers College, 1925-1934, I have transcribed all of the entries (approx. 200) for "scientific instruments and apparatus" from Humboldt's original inventory book, providing a unique record for the kinds of apparatus used in a typical teaching institution c. 1930. Instruments in the on-line museum are linked in this inventory. The number of instruments shown on-line was tripled, to about 60, complete with descriptions, short essays on use (including references to the literature), links to contemporary literature in the museum describing their uses, and scanned descriptions from contemporary catalogs. (Fall 1997)
  7. Reorganized and updated and expanded the Exhibits section of the Humboldt State University Natural History Museum web page. Over 440 images of unique fossils on display at the museum were photographed, digitally processed, indexed, and placed on the Museum's web site. For each of the 11 "Life through time" cases I wrote a brief narrative describing the time period and putting the fossils in context. To make these pages more visually interesting approximately 50 images of fossils and interpretations of prehistoric life from 19th century texts were scanned, digitized and placed on the appropriate pages. The Museum's Life Through Time mural was also digitized, image mapped and placed on the web. Photos of 23 different fossils associated with this mural at the museum were then linked to the mapped images of the live organisms on the mural to give an interactive mural. For these 23 images I also wrote and/or edited and digitized legends for each fossil. The 11 "Life through time" display cases at the museum may also be accessed via the timeline at the bottom of the web-based mural. (Fall 1997)
  8. Design and installation of the Robert A. Paselk Scientific Instrument Museum at the Humboldt State University library. This included museum case design, display design, installation of specimens, research on recommended museum labeling and creation and mounting of labels for all displayed instruments, design and installation of signs, (Fall 2000)
  9. Redesigned and reworked the entire web site for the Robert A. Paselk Scientific Instrument Museum, including new, improved navigational links on all pages (approx. 130 pages), new instrument pages, photography and digital processes of images, scanning and OCR of supporting contemporary literature, new descriptions and display text, a new page on the reception, etc.( Fall 2000)
  10. Precambrian case, HSU Natural History Museum. The culmination of over two years research and effort. Curated, designed, fabricated, installed, etc. this new display. Presented a 45 min talk on the Precambrian at the opening ceremonies at the NHM. (Fall 2002)

  16. Photographed 40+ specimens, and fabricated custom mounts for two specimens in the new Cenozoic Mammals display (Summer-Fall 2004).
  17. Designed, researched, wrote and coded new web pages for the Horse display case, and created on-line Display case indexes for the six new cases in the Cenozoic Mammals display (Sp 2005).
  18. Richard A. Paselk. Co-designed and fabricated the custom “crab box” interactive display in the new Biodiversity display (Fall 2006).
  19. Richard A. Paselk. Designed and fabricated the custom “horse cave” display in the Cenozoic Mammals Horse display case ( Fall 2006).
  20. Designed, in collaboration with HSU Geology student Cerise McLaren, and fabricated two “touch shelves” in the new Cenozoic Mammals display at the HSU NH Museum, Spring 2006 (6-10 hr).
  21. Richard A. Paselk. Researched, rewrote, redesigned and posted the web pages for the 12 Phanerozoic cases in the Life Through Time displays at the HSU Natural History Museum. The the essays were brought up to date with age brought into correspondence with the Timeline 2004 project of the International Geophysical Union, The specimen descriptions were reorganized into a biologically meaningful context, including placement into cladistic categories within the “tree of life,” corresponding with the international Tree of Life project . Important geological occurrences in each Period are summarized and historical footnotes regarding the origins of the different Period names were added. (Fall 2007)
  22. Richard A. Paselk. Researched, designed and installed “The Chemist’s Balance at Humboldt State1926–1986” a new display for the Scientific Instrument Museum in the new SA 4th floor stairwell display case. (Spring 2007)

(Spring 2007)
  24. Directed Biology senior project student Rachel Barnhart in the design and fabrication of the new Permian display case at the HSU Natural History Museum. I photographed all new specimens for this display, added to them the Museum's web site and updated the Permian page. (Spring 2008)
