What Is A Zero-Waste Event
You can make your on campus event Zero-Waste by taking the initiative
to reduce waste. Follow these steps to avoid contributing to the
landfill by reducing, reusing, composting and recycling. With the help
of the Zero-Waste Coordinator at the Campus Recycling Program (CRP),
your event can become Zero-Waste.
To begin, contact the Campus Recycling Program at least two-weeks
prior to your on-campus event. Include the date of the event, what
food is being served, and the approximate number of people attending.
Our Zero-Waste Coordinator will inform you of the services available
for your event, and, of course, answer any questions you may have.
Always, for a Zero-Waste event, CRP provides receptacles and compost
collection. CRP doesn’t provide or service any recycling or trash
receptacles; but Plant Operations does, so contact them. Usually, for
large events, CRP provides educational services. Contact the
Zero-Waste Coordinator, Julienne Sinclairfor more details.
Campus Recycling Program Can Help
Other Considerations:
Reduce the amount of trash you bring to your event by thinking
zero-waste. When selecting food and miscellaneous supplies, choose
items with little-to-no packaging. Buy in bulk, use reusable
containers, and think of what can be recycled or composted and what
will be thrown out.
Inform event attendees that your event is zero-waste. Make
announcements on what individuals can do to help. These messages
should include what can be placed in the receptacles (i.e. recycling,
compost, trash) at the event and the idea behind zero-waste. If you
are using compostable dishes, please demonstrate and encourage
individuals to tear up their plates into quarters prior to placing
them in the compost bins.
Your Pre-Event Options
Reusable Dishware
An on campus event can rent reusable dishware from HSU Dining Services
(707)-826-3541 or
Ron Rudebock: rlr4@humboldt.edu
The J can provide up to one hundred plates and utensils depending on
availability. Renting dishes comes with a sliding fee. Email in
advance to setup.
Other Appropriate Dishware
Non-waxy paper plates without plastic lining are compostable and are
available at any retail store
Sugar Cane ‘bagasse’ plates, cups, bowls, and to-go compostable containers are
available at the North Coast CO-OP. Due to slow breakdown process Compost Program does not accept these as compostable.
Washable Utensils are recommended over biodegradable or plastic. Napkins and paper table cloths can be composted. Keep in mind, compostable dishware takes a long time to compost, so
reusable is always preferred.
Information about Composting at HSU
CRP manages the Humboldt State Compost Branch. Food and paper waste
generated from your event will be turned into compost at our Compost
Demonstration Site and used as a fertilizer around campus.
The compost program accepts a refined list of biodegradable matter.
This includes shredded paper, tea bags, coffee grounds, fruits,
vegetables, breads, and grains. The compost program doesn’t accept
meat, dairy, waxes, or animal fats. Please inform your attendants of
this.
