ResNet is an infrastructure of Ethernet computer network wiring and hardware which provides a direct computing link from your residence hall room to the networked computing resources at Humboldt State and the Internet at large. Ethernet is fast and efficient, opening doors to network applications that are not practical over a modem connection.
Through ResNet, you can: work on class computing assignments with other students both on or off campus; use HSU Library resources; correspond with professors, friends or family through electronic mail; setup and maintain your own Web page with your Sorrel UNIX account, and gather information for research projects.
With ResNet, you can access computing resources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without limiting yourself to campus computer lab hours. This means that you can work on class assignments that require access to the Internet at any time, without limiting yourself to campus computer lab hours.
With your ResNet connection you get high-speed access to networked resources
through ResNet's 100 Mbps (that's 100 million bit per second) Ethernet network. In comparison, a 28.8 modem connects at only 28,800 bits per
second.
A ResNet connection links your computer directly to the network through a constantly active network port. An example of indirect access is a modem connection which requires dialing and establishing a network link over a telephone line before using network resources.
