Help with ResNet

How much does ResNet cost?

ResNet is available to all students living in a connected area at no additional fee. However you will need an Ethernet patch cable and a computer with an Ethernet card. The campus bookstore sells Ethernet patch cables. [ back to top ]

Do I need a modem to connect my computer to ResNet?

No, a modem is not needed for a ResNet connection. ResNet uses an Ethernet network that requires an Ethernet card (hardware) for your computer. To use ResNet wireless your computer will need a wireless network adpater that uses 802.11BG or 802.11A [ back to top ]

I'm living in the Campus Apartments, what do I need to know?

The Campus Apartments does not have Ethernet connections. ResNet Wireless is avalible throughout the building.[ back to top ]

What is an Ethernet card?

An Ethernet card is the computer equipment that is needed to connect your computer to our computer network. It is similar to a modem but uses different technology to transfer information at a very high speed.  [ back to top ]

Can I use America On-line with my ResNet connection?

Yes, you can use America On-line with ResNet. You must be using version 3.0 or higher and setup the software to connect via TCP/IP (or broadband connection.) If you share an AOL account with someone, only one person can be using that account at one time. You still have to pay AOL's monthly fees.  [ back to top ]

Do I get a new e-mail address when I sign up for ResNet?

No. With your ResNet connection you will use your Humboldt E-mail account. All students get an E-mail account when you enter the university.  [ back to top ]

How do I use my Humboldt e-mail account with ResNet?

There is many ways to use your Humboldt e-mail with ResNet. You can use a POP e-mail client to check your e-mail. Some examples of a POP client are Eudora, MS Outlook Express, or any other mail program. You may also check your Humboldt e-mail via the web at http://webmail.humboldt.edu.  [ back to top ]

What other things can I do with my ResNet connection?

You can use most Internet programs that utilize the TCP/IP protocol. Some of the most popular programs are:

  • IRC
  • AOL
  • AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
  • WWW
  • FTP
  • Telnet
  • You can also share files and printers with other students using ResNet.

Due to several problems from outside ResNet (external users attempting to gain access to ResNet computers) we have implemented some security filters. These filters have allowed us to restrict access from any computer outside of ResNet, protecting all computers within ResNet. A negative side effect of this increased security affects the ability to run certain programs - users playing games with computers outside of ResNet may occasionally experience problems.  [ back to top ]

Can I play network games on ResNet?

Yes, you can play network games with other students using ResNet.  [ back to top ]

What is TCP/IP?

TCP/IP is the underlining mechanism that transports information on the Internet. TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol. IP stands for Internet Protocol. When someone makes a computer program that is intended to be used on the Internet they must incorporate TCP/IP in the program.  [ back to top ]

I don't really know much about computers and I was wondering if some computers come with Ethernet cards or not?

Almost all new computers come with Ethernet cards built-in. All new Apple MacOS computers do have built-in Ethernet capability. Older Windows and MacOS computers can install Ethernet cards into an available expansion slot on the mother board. One way to find out if your computer has Ethernet capability is to look in your computer manual for Ethernet instructions.  [ back to top ]

What type of Ethernet connection does ResNet use? How long does the patch cable need to be?

Our ResNet program uses 100base-T. Our entire ResNet program uses standard RJ-45 type connectors for our connections. Crossover Ethernet cables will not work on our system. The length of your patch cable will depend on where you decide to place your computer in your room. For most areas a 25-foot patch cable will allow you to place your computer anywhere in your room.  [ back to top ]

I am trying to setup my computer before I arrive on campus. Can you please provide IP & DNS settings for TCP/IP?

ResNet uses DHCP and this information will be provided automatically to your computer when it connects to ResNet.  [ back to top ]

I am moving rooms. What do I need to do?

Just plug into the ResNet jack in your new room.  [ back to top ]

Where can I buy an Ethernet card?

Most all computers have built in Ethernet. However if your computer does not, there are many places to buy Ethernet cards. Many on-line or mail order companies sell them. Also your local computer retailers should be able to install, configure and test them for you.  [ back to top ]
