PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Dr. Carlson came to Humboldt State University in 1983 after a seven-year stint at Northern Michigan University in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. His expertise is in the use of integrated biophysical information in the decision-making environment of rural communities and natural resource agencies. A large portion of his time has been spent in developing the GIS and remote sensing capability at HSU which is an outgrowth of the planning curriculum he originally designed. One result of that work has been the development of the Spatial Analysis Lab (SALab) as well as numerous research and consulting activities involving GIS in natural resources. While in Michigan, he served as Chairman of both the Marquette County Planning Commission and the Marquette County Mineral Resources Commission.
