Masters of Business Administration

MBA Mission Statement
The MBA curriculum provides students with the tools for solving problems and making decisions within the framework of a strategic plan. The MBA is designed not only to impart the traditional knowledge of accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing but also to equip graduates with the foundation for effective team building, quantitative and qualitative decision making, and creative problem solving.

We designed the one-year MBA program for students from disciplines other than business administration such as biology, engineering, art, psychology, and natural resources. The MBA allows students to manage in a variety of profit and non-profit organizations. The MBA provides a solid qualification in business management for those who either seek a new job, want to improve their career prospects, or are interested in setting up a business of their own. MBA courses are wide-ranging in content, covering essential areas of knowledge and skills required in the competitive business environment of today.

A recent MBA graduate reports the following:

  • "Humboldt State University - Business Department. A friendly and welcoming environment, a highly supportive and proficient faculty and small class sizes made my MBA experience at HSU very productive and memorable. Without any doubt in my mind, I can say it was the best educational program I have completed. The business school at HSU makes a significant effort to ensure that the learning process is effective and pleasant at the same time. Faculty members usually have an open door policy making themselves available for students' questions and concerns. Business programs have plenty of opportunities to through practical activities as case studies and special projects. It felt good to know that the department and us as students were working towards the same goal - high-class enjoyable education. Day in and day out I go back to the many teachings from HSU to succeed at my current job as Marketing Manager for an Electrical Equipment Manufacturer with a very diverse customer base. For sure all the experiences from Humboldt have and always will give me many advantages on the work field."

The one-year program is based on a "fall" semester admit who has fulfilled all prerequisites. In most cases, a minor in business administration will fulfill the MBA prerequisites. The one-year program consists of the following three semester course schedule:

Fall

  • MBA 600: International Economics
  • MBA 610: Data Acquisition/Analysis/Presentation
  • MBA 620: Managerial Accounting

Spring

  • MBA 630: Managerial Marketing
  • MBA 640: Managerial Finance
  • MBA 650: Management Theory

Summer

  • MBA 675: Social Environment/Ethics
  • MBA 679: Policy/Strategy
  • MBA 692: Masters Degree Project

At a time when most business programs in metropolitan areas are overcrowded, resulting in intense competition for admission and classroom space, the Humboldt State University School of Business has maintained small class sizes and has openings for new students.

Undergraduate class sizes range from 25 to 50 students; enrollment in graduate classes rarely exceeds 20. All of the full-time faculty have a doctoral degree or equivalent. The faculty have professional as well as academic experience in the areas in which they teach. Humboldt's reputation for close and harmonious relationships between faculty and students is exemplified by the School. Faculty maintain regular office hours, participate in student organizations, and are available for academic advising and career counseling.

Graduate assistantships are sometimes available for such non-teaching activities as directed research, data accumulation and analysis, and graders for advanced courses.
