Tips for Screen Reader Users
What To Expect When Using A Screen Reader
The Links Will Be Read After The Main Content
Cascading Style Sheets were used to control the layout and positioning of the elements. When style sheets are used to control the positioning, the elements can appear anywhere in the HTML document. Consequently, the navigation links that appear toward the top of the page and on the left side of the screen are actually at the bottom of the HTML document. This will hopefully provide a pleasant experience for the screen reader users because the links will be read after the main content of each page. Using style sheets in this manner also alleviates the need for any "skip links" links.
Tab Key Navigation Tips
Tab Order
The tabbing order has been set so that the links within the main content of each page will be first, followed by the links in the navigation menu on the left side of the screen.
Layout of Some Pages
Some of the longer pages in the SDRC website have a mini table of contents at the top of the page (below the page title). This mini table of contents is for mouse or other pointing-device users to jump quickly to different parts of the page. For tab-key navigation users, it will be easier if you ignore these top links in the mini table of contents as well as the links that read, "back to top".
