RENEWABLE ENERGY

There is increasing evidence that worldwide production of petroleum and natural gas will undergo a major decline in coming decades as reserves run out. Furthermore, the environmental impacts of using these and other nonrenewable fuels, such as coal and uranium, present a major obstacle to the continued use of such resources to meet our energy needs. We can meet this challenge with a combination of renewable energy technologies and more efficient use of energy. We also need to reconsider our lifestyle choices. In a sustainable energy future, we may need to forego some of the wasteful luxuries we in the U.S. and other wealthy countries take for granted today.

SERC’s demonstration projects have incorporated solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy systems. In some projects, we have used electricity generated with photovoltaics to produce hydrogen.
