Take Home Quizzes:
There will be four take-home quizzes. The due dates for these quizzes are Feb. 4, May 4, Mar. 25, and Apr. 29. These take-home quizzes should be viewed as the essay portions of the midterm and the final, with the due dates spread out to ease your workload. The questions for the take-home quizzes are designed to assist your preparation for the exams. You are encouraged to use your textbooks, the in-class and online lectures, and other credible sources to answer the questions as accurately as possible. You are encouraged to include appropriate detail in your answers. Each answer is limited to one (one side), typed (word processed), double-spaced page, in a font that is 10 or 12 point or 12 or 10 characters per inch (no smaller!), with at least 1 inch margins all around.
- Name the three main cultural revolutions, tell when they occurred in different regions of the world, and describe how each cultural revolution changed human efficiency of resource exploitation. Due February 4.
- What is the greenhouse effect? Why do scientists believe human activities are enhancing it? Due Mar 4.
- What is the stratospheric ozone problem? How is the stratospheric ozone problem different from the problem we have with ozone in the troposphere? Is the stratospheric ozone problem solved? Why or why not? Due March 25.
- Name and describe the four stages of a demographic transition. Comment on birth rate, death rate, and population growth rate for each stage of demographic transition. Identify and describe the cultural and environmental conditions for one country of the world in each stage of demographic transition. Tell why animal populations do not experience demographic transitions. Due April 29.
Problem Sets: There are two problem sets. The objective of the problem sets is to give you some experience in applying some simple quantitative system models to the understanding of environmental problems and towards the evaluation of alternative solutions.
