(B.Sc., Magna cum Laude, Western Washington University, M.Sc., Western Washington University, Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1990) is a natural scientist and environmental educator working in universities, non-government not-for-profits and government agencies for 25 years.
He was the executive director of The Center for Field Research – Earthwatch, helped launch the Americorps program as Associate Director for Environmental Programs and was founding Field Director for The Center for Coastal Studies-School for Field Studies in coastal British Columbia, Canada.
David has taught geology, biology, environmental sciences and science education at the University of Connecticut, Boston University, Metropolitan State College of Denver, the University of Pittsburgh's "Semester at Sea" program, Colorado School of Mines, the New Mexico Institute of Mines and Technology, St. Ambrose College, and Prescott College.
At the Colorado Outward Bound School, he supervised environmental training of instructors and edited their instructor publication resources.
David is a study leader for several Smithsonian Institution study tours of western North America, Costa Rica and Iceland’s protected areas. David has worked in 77 countries. He specializes in designing and teaching environmental studies and sciences programs for undergraduate and science education graduate students, including most recently the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation’s Leadership Program for Teachers Costa Rica Environmental Science Institute.
David is currently the founding executive director of the Environmental Learning Institute. He has published numerous papers and abstracts in environmental education and the earth sciences. His work focuses on conservation, preservation and restoration of threatened ecosystems working with ecosystem-based communities whose livelihood is intimately interwoven with the natural landscape.
An exploring geographer by passion, David enjoys scientific exploration of remote regions utilizing back pack, sea kayak and scuba. He has been working in Baja for 20 years.
