INSTRUCTOR

Willow Abel

Willow Abel among treesI graduated from UCSC in 1992 with a degree in Literature/Creative Writing. In June of 1997 I completed my Masters in Environmental Education with the Audubon Expedition Institute. My areas of emphasis were ecopsychology, bioregionalism, and the integration of wilderness experience and artistic expression. I am a former Sierra Institute student who has been teaching with the Institute since 1997. My passions are living and learning in the wilderness, painting, drawing, poetry, ritual, healing arts, singing, dancing, and sustainable living in body, mind and spirit. I am excited to offer a program that not only reconnects you with wild nature but also provides a bridge between wilderness and modern urban industrial society.

Incredible things happen when you get out in the field with a small group. A community is created in which the dynamics are rich, complex and an education in themselves. In addition, there is a private thread that is the individual before and after the course and the individual away from the group at times, alone by a creek, in the garden, or under the stars. Finally, there is the reading and course work, ideas and questions that bring deeper meaning and intention to our lives.

It is becoming increasingly rare to have the opportunity to live in the wilderness or in a small community growing our own food, generating electricity from sun and water, and making our own place-based culture. I hope that providing an extended experience of both will reassure and inspire you to pursue your own vision of sustainable living, whether it is homesteading, greening cities, or another of the many ways in which we can live with a deep awareness of place.

Sincerely,

Willow Abel
