ABOUT SIGMA XI
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society is the international honor society for scientists and engineers. Founded in 1886, its goals are to foster worldwide interactions among science, technology, and society; to encourage appreciation and support of original work in science and technology; and to honor scientific accomplishments.
Today Sigma Xi is a membership society of nearly 90,000 scientists and engineers. There are more than 500 chapters at colleges and universities, government laboratories, and industry research centers. Throughout its history, more than 170 members have received the Nobel Prize.
Membership in Sigma Xi is by invitation. The nation's most promising students in science and engineering who have shown potential as researchers are invited to join as associate members. Full membership is conferred upon those who have demonstrated noteworthy achievements in research. Each year the Society initiates more than 5,000 new members.
AMERICAN SCIENTIST
Sigma Xi has published American Scientist, an award-winning, multidisciplinary science magazine, since 1913. Published six times a year, each issue features illustrated articles on a broad variety of topics, including biology, chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy, computing, psychology, mathematics, and technology. In recent years it has been honored with many awards for editorial, design, and illustration quality. The Scientists' bookshelf, the most comprehensive book-review section offered by any science magazine, is a feature of every issue. The magazine is a benefit of membership, and each issue includes the membership newsletter, "Sigma Xi Today." It is also available on newstands around the world and for individual or institutional subscription.
GRANTS-IN-AID OF RESEARCH
Since 1922 Sigma Xi has invested in the future of science by awarding small research grants annually to graduate and undergraduate students. More than 22,000 research grants have been given to further the careers of young investigators.
