Dear HSU Undergraduate and Graduate Students,
I am inviting you to become a member of the HSU chapter of Sigma Xi. Sigma Xi is an international scientific research society that promotes excellence in science (http://www.sigmaxi.org/). Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is a non-profit organization of nearly 75,000 scientists and engineers who were elected to the Society because of their research achievements or potential. Sigma Xi has more than 500 chapters at universities and colleges, government laboratories and industry research centers. In addition to receiving the magazine American Scientist, Sigma Xi has a Grants-in-aid of Research Program for students, and holds forums on critical issues at the intersection of science and society. Most of the society’s work is done at the chapter level by working within the local community where we have the greatest potential and influence.
What does the HSU chapter of Sigma Xi (http://www.humboldt.edu/~sigmaxi/) actually do, and how would you participate? Our chapter has sponsored seminars on campus since 1993. These seminars and the social events around them are an excellent way for you to meet the diverse community of scientific colleagues in and around HSU, and of course the off-campus speakers. Last spring the Chapter decided to embark on a project to increase opportunities for students to communicate their research to the university community. Thus we are organizing the 1st Annual HSU Sigma Xi student poster competition. All students from CNRS are welcome to participate, but as a member you could participate and/or help with the judging of posters.
If you would like to become a member, then you need to fill out a form, pay a fee, and if at all possible meet your colleagues at a low key induction ceremony that will be held on Friday, May 9, at 3:00PM in Goodwin Forum. Email Frank Shaughnessy (fjs3@humboldt.edu) in order to get the membership form, and please mail your check made out to “HSU Sigma Xi” to Frank Shaughnessy in the Department of Biological Sciences; the form and check should be received by Monday, May 4. As a student, your annual dues will be $20.00. The induction fee of $7.50 is paid by the HSU chapter of Sigma Xi, not you.
The HSU chapter of Sigma Xi needs your ideas and energy to grow. Please give some serious thought to this invitation. If you have any questions, please email me at scmcbride@ucdavis.edu. Thanks!
