Creating an Endowed Chair at Humboldt State
Make a Lasting Difference
Private philanthropic support to Humboldt State University is central to maintaining the quality of teaching, research and public service. We recognize the desire of donors to support a wide variety of academic and research activities through the creation of endowed funds that bolster, in perpetuity, the University’s mission.
How Endowed Chairs Work
The strength of a great university resides in its faculty, which is why one of the most important types of gifts you can make to higher education is an endowed chair. Created by a gift, these highly-prized academic positions are supported by earnings from invested funds. The proceeds from the fund are used to enhance the faculty member’s teaching, research, and service responsibilities. These chair resources can be used, for example, to augment salary and support professional travel funds, student researchers, laboratories, facilities, equipment and supplies. The faculty member who occupies or “holds” an endowed chair is carefully chosen for their past and potential academic achievement, as well as their leadership in a chosen field.
One Fund—Many Beneficiaries
Endowed chairs offer many benefits to a university, the donor, honored scholars and, most of all, to students. Endowed chairs enable a university to offer its students the most diverse and current curriculum possible. Professors honored by appointments receive a significant boost in their ability to conduct pioneering research. Donors gain the satisfaction of knowing that their names will be linked in perpetuity to a commitment to academic excellence and the achievements of the chair holder. Endowed chairs can also help the university attract high-caliber scholars and teachers and retain junior faculty who are sought after by other institutions.
